The Office of State Relations serves as the primary liaison between Indiana University and the legislative and executive branches of Indiana government, including the Indiana General Assembly, the Office of the Governor, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the State Budget Agency, and other relevant units of state government. The State Relations team also works closely with other universities and higher education groups in Indiana.
Governor Mike Pence signs into law House Enrolled Act 1042, requiring higher education institutions who accept state financial aid to annually provide students with a letter explaining their current student loan debt obligation. This legislation was molded after Indiana University's highly successful debt letter program that has helped undergraduate students reduce borrowing by approximately $44 million. HEA 1042 was authored by IU alumnus State Representative Casey Cox.
